New Detroit Magazine is a series of three zines promoting Detroit artists for rap and techno fans to discover
Problem Space
Before New Detroit, rap and techno fans in Detroit couldn’t discover new artists in print media because there were no local publications made for those demographics. Detroit brands who label themselves a techno magazine lack a widespread printed physical presence, instead operating as web-based blogs or news/party promotion pages on Instagram. Local magazines that currently cover techno in Detroit are art and fashion magazines which do not focus on it enough to properly visually represent it.
Design Solution
The zine format promotes Detroit techno, rap and culture in a unique context, while serving as collectible merchandise. The articles in the zine communicate a more intimate, honest perspective of the artists and the places they’re from, while giving a spotlight to both. New Detroit will be stocked in cafes, record stores, and concert merch stands to bring in hardcore fans, casuals and people who are completely unaware of the genres/artists.
