Reclaiming Queen City

LOCATED ON 6000 LEVEL
Reclaiming Queen City is a 2-Part Zine series empowering Gen-Z to connect with diverse Queer history
Problem Space
Cincinnati’s Queer nightlife faces disappearing venues and shrinking safe spaces, leaving performers with fewer stages and community gathering spots. Drag artists today are navigating increasing social stigmas and political backlash. In addition, criticism of drag and its impact is frequently rooted in misinformation, framing the artform as dangerous or obscene. This view clashes with the supporters who see it as an artistic and empowering expression of gender.
Design Solution
This project responds to the Midwest region’s limited view with a two-part zine series inspired by DIY, countercultural publishing traditions. Zines have long served as accessible tools for sharing perspectives outside of mainstream media. The brand reframes drag as both an act of cultural expression and resistance. Through the visibility of diverse drag artists, punk inspired illustration, and visual storytelling, the project invites Gen-Z audiences to engage with local Queer history.
