Tattoos have existed for nearly as long as humans, with meanings and practices varying across the world. Despite their ancient roots, tattoo history is rarely told or celebrated. Young adults in the United States often see tattoos as a contemporary trend, but lack an awareness of their complex history, or how women have helped shape it for over a century. This is due to a lack of accessible or engaging resources.
Design Solution
This video educates the audience about tattoo history by highlighting three influential female tattoo artists in the United States throughout the 20th century. Through the use of bold, American traditional inspired illustrations and typography, it brings history to life through a visually engaging narrative. This video celebrates these women’s contributions, encourages a deeper appreciation for tattoos and challenges lingering stereotypes or judgments towards tattoos today.
