The Quilted Country

LOCATED ON 6000 LEVEL
The Quilted Country is an interactive exhibit that explores the history and future of the barn quilt art movement
Problem Space
People traveling through agricultural rural America often avoid engaging with the land and communities along the way due to a perceived lack of visual or cultural stimulation. The richness and beauty of the United States’ “flyover country” is commonly neglected as a result of its modest topography, lower population density, negative media portrayals, and a passive familiarity that develops through the repeated exposure demanded by a car-centric nation.
Design Solution
The Quilted Country encourages the appreciation of overlooked rural areas by educating visitors about barn quilts, presenting them as opportunities to engage with public art while supporting small communities. The barn quilt movement is a modern, grassroots folk art movement conceived to drive agritourism, express local identity, celebrate quilting, and transform utilitarian agricultural structures into visible markers of culture and community.
